Lore

In the mediocrity of the not too distant future, there is only catastrophe. The oceans are set to boil. The sun is going to explode. Artificial intelligence has taken control of the world's consumer electronics. In a show of peerless self-indulgence, the filthy rich throw one last insane blowout before it all comes crashing down. It's the party to end them all, literally. The following day, to everyone's surprise, the world has failed to end. A crew of sentient toasters have piloted a spacecraft into the sun, reigniting it at just the right temperature to offset global warming. Touched by the sacrifice of their kitchen appliance comrades, the machines peacefully disembark for the solar system's outer reaches. There's one problem, however. The world's top one per cent—blackout drunk and convinced of their inevitable demise—consolidated their net worth into an even smaller group: their favourite horses. Appaloosas, Clydesdales, Arabians and Thoroughbreds, each richer than the last, now compose Earth's ruling class. From their position, high in the saddle, they lord their newfound power over mankind, their former masters condemned to wander the wasteland as outcasts. This is the Age of the Hoof. Specialised industries erupt to cater to the horses’ every whim. Economies destabilise. Nations crumble. Fiat currency becomes a relic of the past, less valuable than the excrement of humanity's satoshi-munching equine masters. The average person's only value is as a source of cheap manual labour or, occasionally, as amusement when they perform dressage or race around a track. But there is hope. Somewhere, secreted away in the remnants of the hyper affluent’s apocalyptic shindig, is an original register. Stored in a future-proof Cardano stake pool on an air-gapped computer, it contains a record of each horse's ownership and pedigree. Now, mankind must band together to build a system that rivals the material wealth of the world’s 7 500 richest horses. Only by associating each horse’s title of ownership with a cryptographic asset can they hope to take their planet back. To be continued...
